The Celtics were led that year by a young Bill Russell. After leading the USA to gold in the 1956 Olympics, Russell joined the Celtics and helped revolutionize the Celtics offensive approach by teaming up with Bob Cousy for the fast break. Prior to the start of the 1962-1963 season, Bob Cousy, the heart and soul of the Celtics franchise, announced that he would retire following the season. In 1963, the Celtics won their fifth consecutive NBA title as dominate Bill Russell won his third straight MVP Award. John Havlicek, who was a rookie during the 1962-1963 season, helped fill the void in the Celtics franchise that was left by Cousy. Havlicek developed into one of the game’s premier players and was a part of eight championship titles throughout his time with the Celtics.

He came from a hard-scrabble little town in southern Indiana to win the loyal and unwavering support of Celtics fans, (the most steadfast and loyal in all of sports). Bird captured rookie of the year honors in the 1979-80 season and was named to twelve NBA All-Star games, being named the All-Star game MVP in 1982. From 1984 thru 1986, Bird captured three consecutive MVP awards. Bird had superb vision, wonderfully strong hands, and, most importantly, an intutive sense of how to use his athletic gifts instantly and to their maximum effect. While leading the Boston Celtics to three NBA titles, he was twice named MVP of the NBA Finals. After an illustrious playing career, Bird went back home again to Indiana to capture Coach of the Year honors in his coaching debut with the Indiana Pacers. June 6, 1946, marked the birth of the Boston Celtics. Club owner, Walter Brown, named the team Celtics from the old Original Celtics in New York (1914-40). Arnold Red Auerbach was hired by Brown to coach the team for the 1950-51 season. When the Chicago Stags folded, its three guards names were put in a hat. Auerbach picked Bob Cousy's name out of the hat. In 1950, the Celtics chose Chuck Cooper of Duquesne as the first-African-American draft choice in the NBA. Brown and Auerbach selected Bill Russell out of the University of San Francisco in the 1956 draft and thus began a legacy in basketball never to be duplicated. In their inaugural season, the Boston Celtics finished 22-38. Although the team did not achieve a winning record, they had many colorful and interesting players.
